What the switchboard does
The switchboard distributes electricity through the home and houses protective devices for its circuits. Circuit breakers protect wiring against short circuits and over-current. Safety switches monitor current flow and disconnect a protected circuit when they detect leakage that may present an electric-shock risk. Surge protection serves a different purpose again.
Those devices are not interchangeable. A board can contain circuit breakers without providing safety-switch protection to every circuit, and a surge diverter does not provide personal protection against electric shock. The labels, test buttons and circuit arrangement need to be assessed rather than guessed from the age of the enclosure alone.
Reasons an assessment may be worthwhile
An assessment can be useful before a renovation, large appliance, new dedicated circuit, solar or battery planning, as well as when the board itself shows signs of age or crowding. Energy Safe Victoria also recommends checks for older household wiring, especially in homes built before the 1980s.

What an upgrade can involve
The exact work is property-specific. It may include a new enclosure, modern protective devices, circuit separation, labelling, earthing work, defects found during testing and coordination with metering or supply equipment. Existing wiring does not automatically become new simply because the switchboard is replaced.
A residential-type main switchboard replacement is prescribed electrical work in Victoria. Energy Safe Victoria states that prescribed work requires an independent inspection. Planning the outage and inspection is therefore part of the job, not an afterthought.
How to prepare for the quote and outage
Send a safe photo of the full board with its door open, without removing covers or touching internal components. Mention renovation plans, solar or battery systems, large appliances and any history of tripping. Before the booking, ask what must be switched off, how long essential services may be unavailable and how inspection timing will be coordinated.
